The Jaguar E-type debuted at the Geneva show in 1961 where it wowed onlookers with it’s styling. It was an evolution of the Le Mans winning C- and D-type Jaguars of the 1950’s. With innovations such as disc brakes, and an unbelievably low price it would be a sure-fire hit. The icing on the cake was when journalists managed to take a ‘standard’ road car over 150 mph, a then unheard of speed.
Over the years, the E-type became larger and less sports, more Grand Tourer. This was largely due to American safety legislation becoming more and more onerous. The E-type was finally killed off in 1975. Early cars, however, are possible the closest that automotive vehicles have come to being 'art'. One could happily use them as sculpture, but believe me, the best way to enjoy them is to drive one. Imagine you are comingdown the Mulsanne straight, or cruising the Kings Road....
The example we have for you is an early roadster. Be reminded that whilst for it’s era it was a quick sports car, that handled well, in comparison with today’s cars it is most certainly not a sports car, although overtaking is made to look pretty easy! Handling can be treacherous in the wet, and also remember old cars do not have any of the safety features newer ones do……
